SURFACE VALUE

SURFACE VALUE

A publication exploring how design influences what we buy.

Surface Value is a design-driven zine and dissertation project that investigates the role of graphic elements and illustration in packaging design. It explores how surface-level visuals colour, typography, imagery, and layout shape perception, trigger emotion, and influence consumer choices on the shelf.

It is presented as a three-part publication, with each chapter printed as a separate, colour-coded booklet. The trio is housed in a custom-designed box, reinforcing the theme of packaging as both a container and a communicator.

  • This project aims to uncover the persuasive power of packaging visuals. By merging design research with visual experimentation, Surface Value examines how carefully crafted packaging can sway purchasing decisions, communicate brand identity, and tell compelling stories all before a product is even touched.

    • Visual Honesty – Acknowledging the power of first impressions and how they’re designed.

    • Design Awareness – Helping designers and consumers better understand how visuals influence behaviour.

    • Creativity with Purpose – Balancing aesthetic exploration with commercial function.

    • Design students and educators exploring packaging, branding, or consumer psychology.

    • Graphic designers seeking insight into the emotional and strategic aspects of packaging.

    • Creative marketers and brand strategists interested in visual influence.

    • Curious minds who want to understand why they reach for that product on the shelf.
